When it comes to film and music, users of Netflix and Pandora have long benefited from tailored selections and suggestions to discover new titles or artists. Artsy, an extensive digital storehouse of fine art that went live this month after two years of testing, extends personalized discovery into a new realm.
“Bringing together art and science,” as the site puts it, Artsy aims to help users discover new artists and works based on what they already like. One of our 100 Things to Watch in 2011, Artsy is based on what it calls an Art Genome Project—akin to Pandora’s Music Genome Project—a human-powered method of classifying the characteristics of the 20,000 images on its site (the result of a collaboration with a slew of galleries and museums). Artsy helps connect the dots in some unexpected ways to lead people to art they may never have stumbled upon otherwise, a manifestation of Re-engineering Randomness, one of our 10 Trends for 2012.
